June Huang, Concertmaster

June Huang grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and began violin at the age of five. She studied at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received a Bachelors degree from the Oberlin Conservatory. In Oberlin she was introduced to the baroque violin and studied with Marilyn McDonald. She also attended the Aspen Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, and Meadowmount School of Music. Upon leaving Oberlin, June was invited to become a member of the Young Artist String Quartet of the University of California. Based in Santa Barbara, the quartet was under the guidance of Ronald Copes of the Juilliard String Quartet, and received coaching from many international visiting artists. They were the summer quartet-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts, were a featured ensemble at the International Hong Kong Chamber Music Festival, and received a grant to perform concerts in Taiwan. June received her Masters degree and also performed and contracted for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra.

June continued her professional career in Montana as a violinist of the Cascade String Quartet. The position included chairing the Great Falls Symphony and giving concerts throughout the Northwest. She also began a long-time association as a faculty member of the Red Lodge Music Festival.

Upon marrying her husband Mike, June moved to Chapel Hill (NC), taught violin at Duke University and Meredith College, and returned her attention to the baroque violin, performing as a member of Ensemble Courante. Finally relocating to the Washington, DC area in 1991, June became a faculty member of the Levine School of Music. She is the founder and director of the Levine String Camp and Strings Plus. While pregnant with her first daughter, she received a grant to study Suzuki pedagogy with Shinichi Suzuki in Matsumoto, Japan.

Here in Washington June has performed with every major baroque ensemble, frequently acting as concertmaster for such groups as the National Cathedral Baroque Orchestra, as principal violinist of Opera Lafayette, Washington Bach Consort, Folger Consort, and Hesperus, and as a guest of many groups across the Northeast, including Brandywine Baroque (DE), the Staunton Music Festival (VA), and REBEL (VA). She lives in Fairfax with her husband, Mike, and daughters, Kayla and Emma.
